{"id":157,"date":"2016-03-09T01:00:44","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T01:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/?p=157"},"modified":"2016-03-09T23:25:32","modified_gmt":"2016-03-09T23:25:32","slug":"tivoli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/2016\/03\/09\/tivoli\/","title":{"rendered":"Tivoli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Saturday February 20th<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our trip to Tivoli was a pretty last minute decision, but it ended up working out really well since it&#8217;s only about an hour or less train ride just north east of Rome. \u00a0The two main things to see in Tivoli are Hadrian&#8217;s Villa and Villa d&#8217;Este both of which were very cool.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-158 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05639-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC05639\" width=\"339\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05639-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05639-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05639-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/>Hadrian&#8217;s Villa is an expansive villa located near\u00a0Tivoli which was built in the second and third<br \/>\ndecades of the 2nd century. \u00a0It is mostly ruins now but it&#8217;s amazing to imagine the buildings being covered and elegantly decorated. \u00a0The two other mind blowing things are how far away it is from Rome, at least during the 2nd century, and how large the whole complex is (300 acres). It is about 18 miles from Rome and after 128 AD was the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-159 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05668-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC05668\" width=\"335\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05668-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05668-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05668-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/>permanent residence of the emperor Hadrian meaning that all communication needed to run the city of Rome had to travel 18 miles probably by horseback. \u00a0We ended up spending over three hours there which was longer than we originally expected to, but it was well worth it.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-160\" src=\"http:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05652-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC05652\" width=\"604\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05652-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05652-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05652-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_161\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161\" class=\"wp-image-161 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05726-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC05726\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05726-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05726-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05726-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Staircase in Villa d&#8217;Este<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The other place we visited in Tivoli was Villa d&#8217;Este which was a large villa with a huge stepped Italian Renaissance garden which descends down the side of a hill. \u00a0The garden, which contains 500 different water jets or fountains, was laid out on a central axis and is immaculately manicured to maintain the formal garden look. \u00a0The villa itself had some cool frescoes in it most of which the artists were playing with perspective. \u00a0One <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05751-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSC05751\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05751-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05751-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cbehnke.com\/rome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC05751-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>ceiling in particular looks about twice as high as it really is just because of the use<br \/>\nof perspective!
